Hastings

8 mi (13 km) to the north at Senlac Hill in 1066, the Battle of Hastings gets its name from Hastings. In the form Hastingas, the mention of Hastings is found in the late 8th century. Shown as a borough by the time of the Domesday Book (1086), Hastings had given its name to the Rape of Hastings, one of the six administrative divisions of Sussex.

The regeneration scheme saw the Priory Quarter construction, which houses Saga offices but remains unfinished, bringing to the area 800 new jobs, and the construction of the University Centre Hastings, (known as the University of Brighton in Hastings) the new Sussex Coast College campus. As of November 2017, Hastings holds the Guinness World Record for the most pirates in one place.

Found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 1050, the name H stingaceaster may be an alternative name for Hastings. In South England flood of February 1287, half of Hastings Castle and much of the town in the 13th century was washed away. In the 1930s, the borough engineer Sidney Little built the double decker that runs beyond Marine Court from Hastings Pier, with a Warrior Square break.

Such seaside places patronage (such as Brighton nearby) gave it a life lease so that when, in 1888, in the Georgian era, the English local government reform time came, Hastings became a County Borough, independent of then Sussex (East), the county that was surrounding, responsible for all services that were local; less than one hundred years later, in 1974, that status was abolished. Known as the Hastings Sands, meet the English Channel, forming tall cliffs to the east of the town, Hastings is at the Weald heart, where the beds of sandstone.

Built on the Central Recreation Ground site which to some first-class fixtures of Sussex CCC played host, and the sports royalty such as Sir Don Bradman and Dr. W. G. Grace, Hastings main shopping centre is Priory Meadow Shopping Centre. Many events take place in Hastings throughout the year, the Maydayrun culmination-having motorcyclists of tens of thousands ridden to Hastings, the A21, and the largest of which being the May Day bank holiday weekend, which features a Jack-in-the-Green festival (revived since 1983).

Including a torchlight procession through the streets, a beach bonfire and firework display, the Hastings Bonfire Society stages a Sussex Bonfire held each year during Hastings Week around 14 October. In Hastings, the University of Brighton offers higher education courses in a range of subjects and attracts over 800 students.
